The Confederacy's greatest strength was that it was defending its own territory. Most of the battles were fought in Confederate states because of this. This was a huge advantage for the Confederacy because they were much more familiar with the land where the battles were fought than the Union. The South had another advantage with their military minds. The South may not have had a bigger army than the North, they had excellent military leadership such as Robert E. Lee, Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson, and James Longstreet. Other Confederate strengths include the South being able to produce all the food they needed for their armies and civilians instead of having to import them by sea (this would be very difficult because the Union controlled the Navy), the Confederate soldiers being more eager to fight for their way of life than the North, and the fact that the Confederate army only had to do enough damage to make the Union lose their will to fight, rather than the Northern army having to all out defeat and surrender the South to preserve the Union. The South also proved to be very resourceful. Although they did not have as much manufacturing power as the North, they made due with what they had, using bronze and other melted down materials to make the weapons they needed.
