Background Information
The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865, with the Union ultimately claiming victory. It began when 11 Southern states seceded from the United States and claimed independence from the 23 Northern states. The Southern states formed the Confederacy to fight for their way of life by owning slaves, while the Northern States fought to preserve the Union. Both sides had advantages and disadvantages during the Civil War. This website shows and describes these strengths and weaknesses.
